CGC Updates Grading Standards for Modern Comics
CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) has announced comprehensive updates to their grading standards specifically for modern comics, defined as books published after the year 2000. These changes, effective immediately, represent the most significant revision to CGC's modern era grading in nearly a decade.
What's Changing?
The updates primarily address how certain production flaws and handling defects are evaluated for modern comics. Key changes include:
- Spine Stress Lines: Previously, even minor spine stress could drop a modern book from 9.8 to 9.6. Under the new standards, minimal "tick" marks that don't break color will be more leniently evaluated for books from 2015 onwards.
- Corner Defects: The threshold for what constitutes a "soft corner" versus a "blunted corner" has been adjusted, with more consideration given to how the book was originally packaged by publishers.
- Page Quality: New allowances for extremely minor tanning on books from specific production periods where paper quality was known to be inconsistent.
Why Now?
CGC states that these changes come after extensive data analysis of over 500,000 modern comic submissions. "The manufacturing processes for comics have evolved significantly since 2000," explains CGC's Head of Grading. "Our standards need to reflect the reality of how these books were produced."
Market Implications
Collectors are already speculating on how these changes might affect existing slabs. CGC has confirmed that they will not be re-grading books already in holders unless submitted for re-holder service, meaning the population reports could see interesting shifts as collectors crack and re-submit borderline books.
One immediate effect: expect a surge in submissions of modern keys that previously fell into the 9.6-9.8 borderline range. Books like Immortal Hulk #1, Strange Academy #1, and various Spider-Man keys could see population bumps at the 9.8 level.
